Instant Gaussian Splats in Unreal Engine 5 with Luma AI

The Luma AI plugin for Unreal Engine 5 optimizes the way artists work with gaussian splats and Nerf captures. Luma AI's tools simplify the process from capture to integration, addressing the previously challenging areas of gaussian and Nerf captures.

Now, artists can capture gaussian splats or Nerfs using the iOS Luma AI app, process the data in the cloud, and easily import it into their Unreal Engine projects. Thanks to the latest release of the Free Luma AI Unreal Engine Plugin, which is now available directly on the UE Marketplace.

Luma AI Unreal Engine Plugin Walk through:

Luma AI Plugin Key Features:

  • Seamless Integration: Drag and drop .ply or .luma files directly into Unreal Engine to create ready-to-use Blueprints.

  • Real-Time Rendering: Leverage Luma's advanced renderers for Gaussian Splatting and NeRF, allowing for dynamic and realistic scenes.

  • Experimental Relighting: Test and apply different lighting scenarios to your scenes.

  • Scene Editing: Utilize crop and cull features for precise scene modifications.

  • Shader and Particle System: The plugin's functionality is rooted in Unreal's powerful shaders and the Niagara particle system, offering robust and flexible control.

Luma AI Plugin Limitations:

  • Shadows: Gaussian Splatting scenes currently do not support shadow rendering.

  • Camera Preview: There may be inaccuracies in camera previews.

  • Scene Size Constraints: Large scenes exceeding 2 million Gaussians require chunking, which might cause visible seams.

  • Ray Tracing Limitations: Ray tracing is incompatible with translucent materials like those in the Gaussian Splat Niagara system.

  • Scene Compositing Challenges: When compositing multiple Gaussian Splatting scenes, objects might not be rendered in the correct order.

This plugin presents a comprehensive and evolving solution for artists and developers eager to integrate gaussian splatted and Nerf capture assets into their Unreal Engine projects. While it may not be flawless at present, the plugin shows promise for further development and refinement in the coming months. Its free availability marks a significant shift from previous plugins that were often costly, charging upwards of $75.
