The new HoloLens 2

On the 24th of February at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona Microsoft announced the new HoloLens 2.

Microsoft massively updated HoloLens 2. The field of view has been upgraded from a 30° to 52°, this wider field of view helps create a more immersive mixed Reality experience.

The headset is 3x more comfortable when being worn. Due to the use of lighter carbon fibre plates and the weight of the headset being disrupted across the headset giving a more balanced fit. These features allow the headset to be worn for longer periods and improve the immersion further.

Microsoft improved the holograms, making them feel more touchable with the use of a new “instinctual interaction” designs. This allows buttons and sliders to be viewed but also have a audio connected. The audio reacts to the users movements creating a more physical feel without being able to actually touch the holograms.

The new HoloLens 2 now hosts a built-in eye-tracking system which helps the functionality of the device. Its currently used when surfing the web moving pages up and down but the possibilities of eye-tracking in the HoloLens is much greater.

Microsoft announced a “open app store model” for the holoLens 2 developers. Enabling you to create applications, then sell them. But also create your own app stores, giving developers a world of possibilities. Maybe opening new markets and independent app stores.

Game Engine Support

Epic games announced that support for the HoloLens 2 would be coming in May 2019. The augmented reality(AR) community had been waiting for Unreal Engine to open its engine up and allow developers to start working on AR projects. Unreal will fully support the HoloLens 2 with platform integration and streaming capabilities from May this year.

Unity has full support for Microsoft Mixed Reality and HoloLens. The engine provides a variety of tools, packages and resource to aid when make creating VR and AR projects. Unity also allows you to upload your AR/ VR applications straight to the Microsoft Store.

Who’s it meant for?

At the hefty price of $3,500 the HoloLens isn’t aimed towards consumers its meant to be a enterprise tool for industries. Microsoft wants to provide a AR tool to be used by professional’s in medicine, construction, architecture etc.

Microsoft also wants to attract developers with there new open app store model which would enable developers to create there own platforms to sell and build upon. The developers would create content relevant to the everyday consumer. this is when Microsoft will release the HoloLens 3 at a much lower rate making a common AR device to be used by the masses. But first they need a augmented reality content for the masses to come to and thats the developers job.

HoloLens 2 in the Realtime Pipeline™

Realtime Pipeline™ the end-to-end realtime virtual production solution developed by OSF, have announced with the launch of the Microsoft HoloLens 2 headset, that Realtime Pipeline™ 2.1 will fully support the eagerly awaited AR peripheral from Microsoft.

Enabling high end productions to deploy and work in mixed reality on set, Realtime Pipeline™ connects crew headsets to the mixed reality optical output of both Unity and Unreal realtime engines, enabling Directors, Crews and Talent to see mixed reality elements on-set, in realtime.

Realtime Pipeline™ VFX, animations, digital characters and dynamic virtual sets will all be compatible with the HoloLens series of mixed reality headsets from July 2019.
